  1. This is great. Thanks Bruce

  2. Love the idea, love the show, I’ll definitely listen and help spread the word.

It’s about time someone did a wargame-centric podcast and while 30 minutes sounds about right I could listen to 45 if you are so inclined.

p.s. even if you didn’t rank Dien Bien Phu #1 all-time I would still love the show.

  4. Great show, Bruce. You’ve added a couple of games to my shopping list.

How long until your next video?

I assume you’ve read Thud Ridge? My Uncle was 105 wild weasel pilot. I don’t think anyone has done an electronic warfare / air defense game.

What do you think of the stylized tactical play of Up Front?

Posted by Steven Davis | February 15, 2016, 10:49 pm
    • Probably a few months at least until the final video: I have some new presentation ideas, as always.

Yeah, Broughton’s book is a classic. Have you played John Tiller’s War Over Vietnam or Lee Brimmicombe-Wood’s Downtown? Plenty of Wild Weasel/EW in both of those.

Up Front is a great game. I played more games of that in high school than any other wargame, probably. We played in almost every weekend for a couple years. I haven’t played it lately, but suspect it holds up. It anticipates a lot of mechanics in common use today.

      • I have Downtown. Except for Phantom Leader, which I’ve been meaning to get, the games I’ve seen with ew seem more strategic than tactical. From what I’ve seen this is true of PL as well.

And PL looks like it focuses more on the bombing mission than the chaod of the emerging ew/ad mission.

        I guess I’m looking for a B17 equivalent for the f105. Hmmmmm.

Thud Ridge was wonderfully visceral in its mission descriptions. I haven’t seen that level of engagement in a more modern air game.

And Hell in a very small place had moved to the top of my reading list.

Up front was and is ahead of its time. Fields of Fire seems to be the only game that has come close.

        • Dan Hampton had a pretty good book out last year on the WWs in Vietnam- “The Hunter Killers”. It goes pretty deeply into the chess game between the Weasels crews and the SA-2 operators.

I’ve been meaning to get solo Downtown on the table for a while- the idea of a game about “solving” an air defense “puzzle” intrigues me.

  5. Hey Bruce,
Great to see you dabbling into a wargame podcast.
Is it possible to subscribe to this via iTunes? I can’t seem to locate it.
    Cheers,
    Greg

  7. Very entertaining, although I have to question you about something. When laying out the framework for the core theme of the podcast you mention it will be entirely wargame-centric. This is re-emphasized when discussing Titan, “not a wargame”. But…but then your #3 choice of wargames is Twilight Struggle. Twilight Struggle is a great strategy game, but wargame?

So, if Twilight Struggle is a wargame and Titan is not, I am curious to hear how you define a wargame.

    • Hi Scott!

Thanks for listening. To try and answer your question:

      1. Twilight Struggle is definitely a wargame. A Cold Wargame.
      2. Lech Wałęsa exists, a centaur does not.
      3. Lech Wałęsa could beat up a centaur.

      That’s three reasons!

  8. Bruce, great to hear your podcast on the subjects/news that you want to discuss. While I am not the most hardcore of wargamers, I’ve been a fan of your writing and guest appearances on podcasts going way back to the early days you started writing articles & reviews, and, of course, the T vs B stuff.

Know you must be an exceptionally busy person in your professional life, so thanks for carving out a little slice of time each month for the fun stuff.

  10. Wow! I was publishing Fire & Movement back in ’85, and then went on to be an editor at Computer Gaming World! Our paths have crossed a lot, my friend!

  11. Bruce:

The podcast was entertaining and informative. You have the right mix of topics and was well presented. I listened as I did my lunch time walk. I sometimes do not have time to do real war gaming, but this provides the right type of information and entertainment, that is obtainable without actually playing a game, reading about games or reading rules. Keep it coming!

  13. Wait, someone put together an anthology of wargame writing that *doesn’t* have you in it??

  14. Bruce,
Really enjoyed the podcast, very informative and a great way to stay up to speed regarding new releases. Couldn’t agree more with your assessment of “Dien Bien Phu The Final Gamble”. I’ve never played a game that immerses you into what the actual conflict was really like. The unique combat system, trenches, airlift supplies are all nuances in the game that reflect what really happened.

  15. I’ve preemptively ordered Dien Bien Phu, as i imagine the last copies on this side of the pond will sell out in the wake of your final video.

Good podcast, i tend to miss most announcements so this will be useful for me. Interesting list, my friends due to teach me ASL starter kit this week so that pandora’s box will be opened. I’ve played about 9 games of Rommel in the Desert. Perhaps I’m missing something but i felt it was a bit off compared with Desert Fox. I found it to be very go like and rather deterministic once the supply line rules were taken to their logical conclusion.

  16. Bruce, love your podcasts. You avoid the 2-3 hour “slogcasts” that seem to be proliferating as well as the need to use foul language or brag about drinking bouts. With so many companies (many small) in the wargame space your podcast fills a real need. Your interviews are also on point and don’t drag on.

  17. New subscriber here, love the show. I totally agree with your stance on games/wargames are good. Keep it up!
